# Soldering?
Joining two pieces of metal together by melting and putting a filler
metal with a lower melting point (solder) into the joint.

## Soldering iron
- Fixed temperature/veriable temperature
- Electric/butane

## Solder
Filler metal with low melting point (lower than the melting point of
the metal being joined). Different alloys have different properties.
- 60/40 (60% tin, 39-40% lead)
- Lead free

## Flux
Removes oxidation, improves heat transfer, improves solder flow.
Most consumer solder have a rosin flux core.

- Fume extractor
- Stand (provided 100% of the time, in some form)
- Tip cleaner (sponge/metal wool)
- Helping hands
- Other soldering iron tips (conical, screwdriver, chisel)

# Technique

## Safety
- Don't touch the iron! (you *will* burn yourself eventually)
- Soldering fumes
- Fume extractor
- Wash your hands after!

- Heating both elements
- Melting the solder (wetting)
- Taking the right amount of time
- Not enough time/heat and you get a bad joint
- Too much heat and you damage the components
